Listed above are the 12 most popular first dance pics for Party Time DJ over the last couple years (not a lot of surprises). But more and more couples are no longer content with a “traditional” first dance. Often these alternative musical showcases are accompanied by elaborately choreographed dance moves featuring the bride and groom and some times, the entire bridal party. This trend has been growing in popularity and from my experience is always a crowd pleaser. Often videos taken at wedding receptions capturing the most imaginative, surprising and entertaining of these staged events are featured on YouTube and other internet video sites, becoming cyber sensations.

In recent years, a few of my more memorable gigs at wedding receptions, as well as the actual ceremony, have included an Elvis impersonator who was married in full Elvis attire. “Calling Elvis” by Dire Straights was played as the couple walked up the isle. At the groom’s request every other song was by Elvis Presley. (That’s a whole lot of “The King,” man.)

I performed for another couple that met at a martial arts class, so “Kung Foo Fighting” by Carl Douglas was a logical choice and proved to be quite memorable. Appearing on the dance floor barefoot and wearing their white karate work out uniforms, they “took a bow and made a stance and went into a brand new dance…” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) But that waswas kung foo fighting! It was great. what happened and before you know it the whole wedding party joined them and everybody

After a first dance selection was made by one tri-state soon to be bride, I was sworn to secrecy and instructed not to tell anyone; not even her fiancé. When the big day came and the lights dimmed, she announced to a surprised groom and the entire audience that her secret first dance selection should “serve as a warning.” I then played at her request “Earl had to Die” by The Dixie Chicks. The crowd went crazy and had a great story for years to come.

Make your first dance with your new spouse your own! It will be something you will remember forever especially if you carefully inject some creativity into it!
